Internal Product Review
The CX7080 is a Beckhoff embedded PC with an Arm Cortex-M7 processor at 480 MHz and 1 x RJ45 10/100 Mbit/s Ethernet. Control integration looks especially strong with 8 x 24 V DC multifunction inputs and 4 x 24 V DC multifunction outputs. A 250 kHz encoder input rate supports responsive machine interfacing, making the unit a strong compact platform for distributed automation.

Product Description:
The CX7080 embedded controller is produced by Beckhoff within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. It combines a compact PLC-class CPU with onboard signal conditioning and is intended to execute real-time control tasks in distributed industrial automation cells, motion platforms, and building services. As a headless DIN-rail computer, it manages local I/O slices, processes field data, and communicates with SCADA or cloud systems through standard Ethernet or serial channels.
Computation is handled by an Arm Cortex-M7, 480 MHz processor with one logical core, providing deterministic execution for IEC 61131-3 runtime code. Working data resides in 32 MB SDRAM, while user programs and boot files are stored on a removable 512 MB microSD card. A separate 4 kB NOVRAM safeguards retained variables during power loss without causing memory wear. The controller samples incremental encoders at up to 250 kHz and counter inputs at up to 100 kHz, allowing direct connections to fast position feedback devices. A 12-bit analog converter processes slow-changing signals, while a 3 ms digital filter suppresses contact bounce. Type 3 compliance with EN 61131-2 ensures that input thresholds align with industrial 24 V signaling.
Control outputs are driven from the 24 V backplane, and the unit accepts a nominal supply of 24 V DC while providing up to 0.5 A through four high-side drivers. Network access is provided through 1 × RJ45 port at 10/100 Mbit/s, enabling Modbus TCP or ADS exchanges with higher-level systems. The front panel also provides one RS-232 port and one RS-485 port for legacy devices. Eight digital input channels rated at 8 × 24 V DC and four sourcing outputs rated at 4 × 24 V DC simplify wiring for sensors and actuators located near the cabinet. These interfaces support the local processing of motion, discrete, and process signals within the controller.
