The CX5240-0175 is an embedded PC controller produced by Beckhoff as part of the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Acting as the central control unit on a DIN rail, it combines logic, motion, and user-interface handling for machine cells and process equipment. This allows TwinCAT tasks to run directly next to field I/O without a separate rack computer.

Processing is handled by an Intel Atom x5-E3940 CPU clocked at 1.6 GHz, and its 4-core design enables deterministic multitasking under the TwinCAT 3 runtime (XAR). The system carries 8 GB DDR4 RAM for code, buffers, and real-time image data. Program and system files reside on CFast, supplemented by microSD expansion, with a minimum CFast capacity of 40 GB to accommodate the operating system, engineering projects, and log data. All circuitry is supplied from a single 24 V DC input that feeds both logic and the integrated UPS buffer. The storage, RAM, and processor are linked through the internal E-bus backplane so cycle times remain inside PLC scan requirements even when the OPC UA server or visualization modules are active.

A compact housing measuring 142 x 100 x 92 mm carries thermal guides and leaves space for expansion modules on either side. Network access is provided through 2 x 1GbE RJ45 ports, while four USB sockets and a single DVI-D connector support removable media and HMI displays. For field wiring, the controller auto-detects E-bus or K-bus terminals, simplifying retrofit work. Security keys are held in the integrated fTPM 2.0 module so encrypted variables remain protected. The housing carries an IP20 rating suitable for cabinet interiors, and an onboard supercapacitor maintains 1 MB of RAM for one second during brownouts so critical process data is retained until line power returns.
