The CX5240-0125 is an embedded PC manufactured by Beckhoff and belongs to the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Designed to function as the central controller in distributed I/O architectures, it combines real-time logic processing with fieldbus interfacing so that conveyors, packaging machines, and building services can be coordinated from a single fanless module. It is suited for small to medium-sized lines where cabinet space is limited yet deterministic execution of TwinCAT software tasks is required.

At its core, the unit uses a Intel Atom x5-E3940 quad-core processor running at 1.6 GHz. The 4 logical cores allow cyclic PLC tasks to be distributed across threads without external coprocessors. System data are buffered in 8 GB DDR4 RAM, while machine setpoints that must survive power loss are kept in a 1 MB nonvolatile area. Bulk user programs can be deployed on the CFast and microSD slots, and field updates do not require dismantling the housing. The controller is supplied from a 24 V DC source; internal conversion feeds 10 W to the E-bus or K-bus terminals and delivers 2 A to the I/O backplane. An internal coupling bar can carry up to 10 A through the power contacts to expansion terminals. The electronics are protected to IP20, so the device must be mounted inside a switch cabinet with a controlled atmosphere.

External connectivity is provided by 2 x RJ45, 10/100/1000 Mbit/s Ethernet interfaces that support EtherCAT control networks alongside standard TCP/IP traffic. Service peripherals can be attached to 4 x USB 3.0 ports, each able to source 900 mA. With mechanical dimensions of 142 x 100 x 92 mm, the module occupies little DIN-rail space, and an internal UPS sustains logic power for 1 second so task variables can be written to persistent storage during short outages. A dielectric separation of 500 V exists between the low-voltage electronics and the mounting surface, helping the PC tolerate inductive kicks from adjacent motor drives.
