The CX5140-0161 is an embedded PC supplied by Beckhoff within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Designed for cabinet installation, this controller combines CPU, memory, and field interfaces to execute real-time control code, visualize process data, and link decentralized I/O islands. Its role in industrial automation is to replace separate PLC, gateway, and mini-panel components with one DIN-rail module that drives motion sequences, regulates temperature loops, and exchanges data with supervisory MES layers.
At the heart of the unit is an Intel Atom E3845 processor clocked at 1.91 GHz and organized as four physical cores, giving deterministic multitasking for PLC and visualization threads. The control program executes under the TwinCAT 2 PLC Runtime, allowing IEC 61131-3 languages and fast task cycles. System memory consists of 4 GB DDR3-RAM, which is adequate for large symbol tables and historical buffers. Two independent Gigabit interfaces, presented as 2 x RJ45, 10/100/1000 Mbit/s, support machine networks, fieldbus routing, or redundant ring topologies. Up to 2048 input and 2048 output bytes are exchanged per cycle over the K-bus, and four USB 2.0 ports rated 500 mA each enable local service panels or storage devices. The I/O terminal supply can source 2 A for downstream modules.
Electrical integration uses a 24 V DC feed, and overall draw stays below 16 W during full CPU load, preserving cabinet thermal budgets. An integrated UPS bridges 1 s so cyclic data can be written to flash during power dips, while the power contacts deliver 10 A to high-current terminals. Environmental protection is classified as IP20, which is suitable for clean enclosures with convection airflow. The aluminum housing measures 142 × 100 × 92 mm, conserving rail space beside drives and relays yet leaving room for side-mounted expansion slices.
