The CX5140-0143 is an embedded controller produced by Beckhoff for the CX Embedded PC Systems series. As a DIN-rail-mountable PC, it combines PLC logic, motion control, and HMI tasks inside a compact housing, allowing machine builders to centralize automation functions on the plant floor. The unit includes the TwinCAT 2 NC I Runtime, allowing it to execute deterministic control cycles for axis positioning or synchronized processes directly after installation.
Computing resources are provided by an Intel Atom E3845 1.91 GHz processor that integrates 4 cores to run real-time and user-space threads in parallel. The CPU is paired with 4 GB DDR3-RAM, providing adequate working memory for control programs, visualization data, and fieldbus stacks. Storage can be expanded through the CFast and microSD slots, while the preinstalled Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2016 LTSB 32-bit operating system provides a familiar software environment and long-term support. A shared-memory graphics engine operates at a burst frequency of 792 MHz, enabling local display output for operator panels without separate GPU hardware.
The controller operates from a 24 V DC supply and draws up to 16 W at full load, increasing to 23 W if an optional UPS module is attached. Its aluminum housing measures 142 × 100 × 92 mm, conserving cabinet space while accommodating passive convection cooling. Two Gigabit Ethernet interfaces support line-topology networking, and four USB 2.0 ports supply 500 mA each for service tools or data loggers. The enclosure carries an IP20 rating, protecting internal electronics against solid objects larger than 12.5 mm and supporting installation inside a control cabinet that provides additional ingress protection.
