The CX5140-0140 is an embedded PC manufactured by Beckhoff as part of the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Mounted on a DIN rail, it serves as the central controller inside machines or building automation panels, running PLC logic, motion sequences, and user interfaces without requiring a separate industrial PC. A quad-core Intel Atom processor and integrated I/O connections make the unit suitable for decentralized architectures where available space and power are limited. Its compact format allows processing and control functions to be installed close to connected equipment while maintaining the flexibility needed for a range of automation tasks.
Computation is handled by an Intel Atom E3845 1.91 GHz processor operating across four cores. Program variables, buffers, and the operating system reside in 4 GB DDR3 RAM, while a 256 MB graphics section supports local display tasks. Network traffic is routed through two RJ45 10/100/1000 Mbit/s Ethernet ports for EtherCAT fieldbus or standard TCP/IP channels. The controller draws 16 W from a regulated 24 V DC (−15%/+20%) power supply, and a built-in UPS provides 1 second of buffered operation so active data logging can finish during a brief power interruption. The electrical insulation between the backplane and cabinet ground provides dielectric strength up to 500 V. TwinCAT runtime software is not preinstalled, allowing the appropriate software package to be selected for the intended control application.
