The CX5140-0125 is an embedded PC manufactured by Beckhoff for the CX Embedded PC Systems series. It functions as the central controller for machine-level automation, running deterministic PLC, motion, and visualization tasks in a compact DIN-rail format that fits directly inside a control cabinet. An Intel Atom E3845, 1.91 GHz processor drives the unit and has 4 cores, allowing multiple real-time tasks to execute in parallel.
Processing data is buffered by 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, which holds the operating system, user programs, and active fieldbus variables. The electronics are supplied by a 24 V DC rail, and the PC draws only 16 W under normal load to conserve cabinet power. When the integrated UPS detects a loss of mains power, it keeps the system active for one second and then performs an orderly shutdown. Power consumption rises to 23 W during that interval. Two RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces support redundant or segmented control networks, while four USB 2.0 sockets connect service tools or I/O couplers and supply up to 500 mA each. A dielectric strength of 500 V isolates the logic from field wiring, helping protect the motherboard against overvoltage transients.
The housing measures 142 × 100 × 92 mm and carries an IP20 rating, making it suitable for clean, enclosed panels with controlled airflow. Removable program and log storage is available through a CFast slot and a MicroSD slot, allowing storage media to be accessed without dismounting the controller. The operating environment uses TwinCAT 3 Runtime (XAR), which starts automatically at power-on and provides cycle-accurate task scheduling. Two LAN LEDs and four USB status indicators provide visual feedback during operation and troubleshooting.
