The CX5140-0123 is a compact embedded PC manufactured by Beckhoff within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Designed as a DIN-rail controller, it combines PLC logic, motion control, and visualization tasks for small to midrange machines. The unit bridges fieldbus I/O with high-level software so that deterministic real-time control can run directly alongside Windows applications in an industrial environment.
At its core, an Intel Atom E3845, 1.91 GHz processor works with 4 GB DDR3 RAM to execute TwinCAT 2 NC I Runtime cycles and Windows threads without swapping. Two internal buses distribute 24 V logic power, and the system accepts an external supply of 24 V DC. Under typical load, it draws only 16 W, supporting fanless installation inside shallow cabinets. The housing measures 100 mm in height, 142 mm in width, and 92 mm in depth. For deterministic Ethernet and plant IT traffic, the housing provides two RJ45 ports supporting 10/100/1000 Mbit/s that can be switched or addressed independently. Four front-mounted USB 2.0 connectors supply up to 500 mA each for HMI panels or service tools, and a dielectric strength of 500 V isolates the low-voltage electronics from grounded enclosures.
The quad-core design supplies 4 cores to TwinCAT tasks, allowing separate logic, motion, and communication threads to share the same scheduler without latency spikes. Program and user data remain on a CFast card, and the controller includes a minimum capacity of 40 GB, leaving space for trend files and recipe databases. An industrial Windows Embedded Standard 7 P 32-bit image operates alongside the real-time kernel, delivering familiar APIs while maintaining a small footprint. The enclosure has an IP20 rating, so the device must be installed in a closed control cabinet. The fanless metal enclosure withstands 500 V dielectric tests and supports an optional UPS mode that increases power demand to 23 W.
