The CX5140-0120 is an embedded control computer from Beckhoff that belongs to the CX Embedded PC Systems series. The unit combines an Intel Atom platform, onboard I/O, and dual Ethernet interfaces in a compact housing that mounts directly on a DIN rail. In machine and plant automation, it serves as a deterministic PLC and motion controller, replacing separate hardware layers with one integrated PC solution. Its industrial design allows processing, communication, and control functions to operate within the same DIN-rail-mounted device.
At the heart of the controller is the Intel Atom E3845 processor. It has 4 CPU cores clocked at 1.91 GHz, allowing the real-time operating system to run control logic, data logging, and visualization tasks in parallel. The computing section is supported by 4 GB DDR3-RAM, which is sufficient for medium-sized TwinCAT projects and local databases. Power comes from a regulated 24 V DC supply, and the electronics draw only 16 W under typical load to limit heat inside the cabinet. A one-second UPS function supports an orderly file-system shutdown when external power is lost, helping preserve stored data.
Two Gigabit Ethernet interfaces use 2 × RJ45 ports and support network traffic at 10, 100, or 1000 Mbit/s. The controller also provides 4 × USB 2.0 high-current sockets for scanners, flash drives, and other compatible peripheral devices. Removable media options include a CFast card bay and a microSD slot, allowing application images and logs to be stored separately from the system drive. The electronics reside inside a 142 × 100 × 92 mm aluminum enclosure that has an IP20 protection rating and weighs 1095 g. When the optional UPS capacitor pack is engaged, total power consumption rises to 23 W.
