Product Description:
The CX Embedded PC Systems series from Beckhoff includes the CX5140-0115 industrial controller. This unit integrates an Intel Atom E3845 processor with onboard interfaces and a DIN-rail housing, allowing machine builders to run PLC logic, motion sequences, and visualization directly within a modular I/O terminal stack without a separate rack computer. By combining control, communication, and storage in one enclosure, it reduces required panel space while maintaining deterministic operation for factory automation applications.
The controller uses a 1.91 GHz CPU with 4 cores, allowing multiple real-time tasks to share processing resources without causing interrupt jitter. Application code and the operating system reside in 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, providing capacity for sizable TwinCAT projects and buffered variables. The internal electronics draw up to 16 W under full load from the system supply. The power input operates at 24 V DC and also supports the connected terminal circuitry. A 2 A I/O terminal supply feeds adjacent K-bus modules, while a 10 A power-contact path transfers higher currents to downstream terminals. When an external uninterruptible power supply is connected, charging increases consumption to 23 W, and the 1 MB CFast-based UPS buffer protects remanent data during a mains power loss.
The enclosure measures 92 mm deep, 142 mm wide, and 100 mm high, allowing the device to fit inside shallow control cabinets while leaving ventilation clearance near DIN-mounted power supplies. Its compact dimensions support installation with modular terminals without requiring a separate computer rack or an unusually deep enclosure. Insulation spacing provides a dielectric strength of 500 V between the supply and logic domains, helping protect the CPU board from overvoltage transients. The isolated internal layout also helps prevent unwanted energy from inductive loads on the terminal bus from reaching sensitive processor circuitry.
