The CX5140-0113 embedded PC is produced by Beckhoff and belongs to the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Designed for installation next to I/O terminals, the unit combines PC-based control with compact dimensions to coordinate fieldbus devices and user interfaces on the plant floor. Its integrated hardware resources allow deterministic execution of automation tasks while minimizing cabinet space. The PC can serve as the central control platform for small to midrange machines, replacing separate PLC, gateway, and HMI hardware.
The processing section is built around an Intel Atom E3845 1.91 GHz quad-core system, and all 4 CPU cores are accessible to the real-time operating system for multitasking control loops. Application data reside in 4 GB DDR3 RAM, providing adequate buffering for recipe storage and diagnostic logs. Two Gigabit Ethernet controllers support communication at 10/100/1000 Mbit/s, enabling fast data exchange with distributed servo drives and MES servers. The power input requires a regulated 24 V DC source, matching standard control cabinet power rails. The electrical design provides a dielectric strength of 500 V. The device also includes 256 MB of graphics memory for local display tasks and withstands electromagnetic conditions common to industrial production lines.
The front panel provides 4 × USB 2.0 connectors for service keys, barcode readers, or external drives, while two RJ45 sockets support the dual LAN controllers for flexible network separation. Maximum power consumption is limited to 16 W, allowing the fanless aluminum housing to be cooled by normal cabinet airflow. With an IP20 enclosure rating, the computer is intended for installation inside a protected control cabinet and can tolerate vibration associated with machine operation.
