The CX5140-0110 is an embedded PC produced by Beckhoff within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. The unit combines control, visualization, and networking in a single DIN-rail housing, enabling it to act as the central controller inside compact industrial machines and building automation panels. By executing deterministic software alongside fieldbus interfaces, it handles PLC logic, motion tasks, and data acquisition without requiring a separate rack-mounted computer.
The computing section is driven by an Intel Atom E3845 1.91 GHz processor. Its 4-core architecture provides multithreaded execution for IEC 61131-3 runtimes and HMI services. Application code is stored temporarily in 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, while 256 MB of shared graphics memory supports 2-D and 3-D rendering at resolutions up to 1920 × 1200 through the DVI-I interface. Two Gigabit Ethernet controllers provide 2 × RJ45 ports operating at 10/100/1000 Mbit/s for EtherCAT or standard TCP/IP topologies. Power is supplied at 24 V DC, and the device draws a maximum of 16 W during normal operation, keeping heat generation in the cabinet low. Digital media and system images can be loaded through the external CFast or microSD card slots, while the onboard GPU drives displays at the listed resolution without an additional graphics card.
Peripheral expansion is provided by 4 × USB 2.0 Type-A sockets rated at 500 mA, which accept touchscreen panels, data storage devices, and diagnostic adapters. The integrated UPS can protect the system image by maintaining logic power for one second, and total power demand rises to 23 W while this backup is active. Electrical isolation within the I/O terminal stack has a dielectric strength of up to 500 V. The housing measures 142 × 100 × 92 mm, has an IP20 enclosure rating, and mounts horizontally to preserve convection paths inside the control cabinet.
