The CX5120-0163 is an embedded PC controller engineered by Beckhoff for the CX Embedded PC Systems series. As a DIN-rail-mounted computing node, it unifies PLC, motion, and HMI tasks for small- to medium-sized machines. It combines processing resources, fieldbus connectivity, and local power distribution, allowing one unit to coordinate distributed I/O terminals and drive components in industrial automation. Its compact profile permits direct installation inside control cabinets where conventional rack PCs would be impractical.
Processing duties are handled by an Intel Atom E3815 1.46 GHz single-core CPU paired with 2 GB of DDR3 RAM for program execution and data buffering. Video tasks use 256 MB of shared graphics memory, which is dynamically allocated from system RAM. The preinstalled TwinCAT 2 NC I Runtime allows the hardware to perform real-time PLC and axis-control functions. The controller has two RJ45 Ethernet interfaces operating at 10/100/1000 Mbit/s, supporting EtherCAT communication and standard TCP/IP traffic. Electrical input is supplied at 24 V DC, making the controller compatible with common industrial control power systems. The logic stage has a dielectric strength of 500 V, while typical power consumption remains below 11 W.
Peripheral expansion is available through four USB 2.0 ports rated at 500 mA each, enabling direct connections to service tools, storage media, or sensors. The terminal I/O bus can supply up to 2 A, and the power contacts can conduct up to 10 A to downstream modules. A built-in uninterruptible power supply section provides a one-second hold-up period so volatile data can be secured during brief power interruptions. The housing measures 122 × 100 × 92 mm, providing a compact footprint for crowded control enclosures. Its IP20 enclosure rating protects against accidental contact with internal components and solid objects larger than 12.5 mm. The enclosure is intended for installation within a suitable industrial cabinet that supplies the required protection from moisture and finer contaminants.
