The CX5120-0161 is an embedded PC module produced by Beckhoff within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. It combines PC-class processing, fieldbus interfacing, and direct I/O coupling so that PLC, motion, and HMI tasks can be consolidated on a single DIN-rail device. Integrated TwinCAT 2 PLC Runtime enables IEC 61131-3 program execution, allowing the product to serve as the central controller in distributed industrial automation cells.

The module runs on a single-core Intel Atom E3815 that operates at 1.46 GHz, providing deterministic control cycles for mid-level logic and motion workloads. A main memory capacity of 2 GB DDR3-RAM stores the real-time operating system, user programs, and variable tables, while 256 MB of graphics memory supports local display tasks when a DVI adapter is used. Because the core count is limited to one, worst-case jitter remains predictable and task scheduling stays consistent. The unit accepts a field supply of 24 V DC; under nominal conditions it draws 11 W, increasing to 18 W when an optional UPS is attached. Up to 10 W can be sourced internally for E-bus or K-bus stacks, ensuring that appended terminals receive logic power without an external feeder. Dielectric strength of 500 V isolates the system power domain from the field level and protects internal circuits.

An IP20 housing allows installation inside standard switch cabinets where ambient dust and accidental contact must be limited, but liquid exposure is not expected. The device supports up to 65,534 E-bus terminals for EtherCAT-based signal acquisition and up to 64 K-bus terminals when legacy I/O is required, with a terminal supply current of 2 A available on the backplane.
