The CX5120-0160 is an embedded PC manufactured by Beckhoff and positioned in the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Designed for DIN-rail mounting next to modular terminals, the unit replaces traditional rack controllers by combining computing, fieldbus master, and low-voltage power electronics in a single enclosure. Within an automated machine or building subsystem, it hosts real-time control code, handles HMI tasks, and routes process data to supervisory networks. This combination allows the embedded PC to act as the central controller for a local automation cell while using limited cabinet space.
Its processing platform is an Intel Atom E3815 running at 1.46 GHz. The processor contains one core, so deterministic control cycles use a single execution path without the timing changes associated with task migration between multiple cores. Working data and code are buffered in 2 GB of DDR3 RAM, while display layers use 256 MB of graphics memory for lightweight visualization on external monitors. The device is delivered without a TwinCAT image, allowing users to install a preferred runtime or configure the unit as a gateway. Typical operating power consumption remains below 11 W. A one-second UPS capacitor bridges brief power interruptions so that file systems can close cleanly and stored data is less likely to become corrupted.
The communication panel carries two RJ45 ports that support 10/100/1000 Mbit/s Ethernet for EtherCAT, Modbus TCP, or standard LAN traffic. Four downstream devices can connect to the integrated four USB 2.0 interfaces, each of which can supply 500 mA. The control electronics operate from a 24 V DC supply. Internal circuitry draws up to 2 A for the I/O backplane, while the power contacts can switch field loads as high as 10 A. The housing measures 122 × 100 × 92 mm and has an IP20 rating, making it suitable for installation inside a closed electrical cabinet. Its DIN-rail format places the computing unit close to connected terminals and helps keep signal paths compact within the enclosure.
