The CX5120-0140 is an embedded PC module produced by Beckhoff within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Mounted on a DIN rail, the unit combines PLC control and Windows-class computing so that fieldbus I/O, motion tasks, and user interfaces can run on a single piece of hardware. Its design allows direct installation inside control cabinets, letting machine builders replace separate controller, industrial PC, and gateway devices with one compact platform for industrial automation.
The computing section is driven by an Intel Atom E3815 processor that operates at 1.46 GHz and uses a single core to execute real-time and user programs. System memory totals 2 GB of DDR3 RAM, while 256 MB of shared graphics memory supports local HMI displays without an external graphics processor. Network connectivity is provided through two RJ45 ports supporting 10/100/1000 Mbit/s, giving the controller access to EtherCAT or standard TCP/IP networks. Field devices such as scanners or service laptops can connect through four USB 2.0 ports rated at 500 mA each. A CFast slot and an additional microSD slot provide removable flash storage for operating systems, recipes, and log files.
Total energy demand stays below 11 W, and the electronics accept a stabilized 24 V DC supply commonly used on machine-level power buses. During brief brownouts, an integrated UPS bridges the control voltage for one second, allowing volatile data to be saved safely. The housing carries an IP20 rating, indicating protection against finger contact and solid objects larger than 12 mm. A dielectric strength of 500 V isolates the internal circuits from the supply line. The physical dimensions of 122 × 100 × 92 mm keep the footprint compact, while passive convection cooling eliminates moving parts. TwinCAT runtime is not preinstalled, allowing the required control package to be loaded for the intended application.
