The CX5020-1120 is an embedded PC manufactured by Beckhoff for the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Designed for cabinet-mounted operation, the module combines processing, memory, and fieldbus functions in a compact housing so it can execute logic, motion, and visualization tasks directly on a machine. Local I/O terminals allow it to serve as the central controller in conveyor lines, packaging cells, and building automation panels that require deterministic processing and real-time communication.
The unit uses an Intel Atom Z530 processor running at 1.6 GHz, and TwinCAT software is not preinstalled. The processor is paired with 512 MB of RAM, which provides working memory for control programs and visualization applications. Power is supplied at 24 V DC, while the maximum power dissipation is 12.5 W. Dielectric spacing withstands 500 V RMS between isolated sections. A passive backplane connects the controller to K-bus terminals, allowing expansion with digital or analog I/O modules. The compact 100 × 106 × 92 mm housing also accommodates dual Ethernet controllers, USB connectivity, and display circuitry. Its passive thermal design avoids the need for an internal cooling fan, while the low heat output supports installation in space-constrained control cabinets.
Two gigabit-capable network interfaces use RJ45 connectors and support link rates of 10, 100, or 1000 Mbit/s for control networks, fieldbus gateways, or configuration computers. Four USB 2.0 ports connect removable media, keyboards, and barcode scanners at transfer rates of up to 480 Mbit/s, while a DVI-D port supports operator displays with resolutions up to 1920 × 1200 pixels. The housing carries an IP20 rating, protecting internal components against finger contact and solid objects larger than 12.5 mm, but it does not provide protection from water. Installation inside a suitable enclosure is therefore required where moisture, conductive debris, or other contaminants may be present. The terminal feed supplies up to 2 A of I/O current, helping maintain stable operation when multiple high-density terminal modules are connected to the backplane.
