The CX5020-1115 is an embedded PC from Beckhoff that is part of the CX Embedded PC Systems series and serves as a DIN-rail controller for decentralized automation. It combines PLC, motion, and visualization tasks on a single hardware platform and interfaces directly with the modular K-Bus I/O terminals used throughout the manufacturer’s product line. TwinCAT 3 XAR is the default control runtime, enabling deterministic task scheduling for machine sequences. This fanless unit is intended for cabinet installation where compact computing power and direct fieldbus expansion are preferred over separate CPU and I/O assemblies.
An Intel Atom processor running at 1.6 GHz provides the execution core, and the processor model is the Intel Atom Z530. Incoming power is supplied at 24 V DC, and the device dissipates a maximum of 12.5 W under full load, which is important for cabinet thermal management. Its physical dimensions are 100 × 106 × 92 mm, allowing the unit to fit next to standard terminal blocks without overhang. Two onboard Gigabit controllers support data rates up to 10/100/1000 Mbit/s for deterministic EtherCAT segments or plant-wide MES traffic. Dielectric strength is rated at 500 Veff between the supply and housing, while the I/O supply rail can deliver 2 A to attached terminal electronics. The IP20 enclosure is suitable for typical control cabinets, and a DVI-D connector provides video output to a local HMI.
Field connectivity includes 2 × RJ45 Ethernet ports and 4 × USB 2.0 interfaces for network connections, service tools, scanners, or removable media. The preinstalled operating system is Windows Embedded CE 6, providing a familiar API for soft PLC tasks and custom .NET applications. A connected DVI-D monitor can display process graphics, while the K-Bus backplane manages digital and analog signals without requiring additional gateways. The fanless design also avoids moving cooling components, making the controller suitable for compact automation cabinets with controlled internal airflow.
