Product Description:
The CX5020-0125 embedded PC is produced by Beckhoff within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Intended for DIN-rail mounting beside I/O terminals, it combines computing power, fieldbus master capability, and display output in one compact housing. The device acts as the central automation controller in packaging machines, material-handling nodes, and building systems that require deterministic PLC execution alongside local data logging and visualization functions.
Computation is handled by an Intel Atom Z530, 1.6 GHz processor, an x86 platform that supports hyper-threading for multitasking across control and HMI workloads. Program variables reside in 512 MB RAM implemented as DDR2 RAM, giving the real-time kernel a predictable latency profile. Four USB 2.0 ports accommodate service laptops, barcode readers, or memory sticks without requiring expansion modules. Worst-case heat dissipation is limited to 12.5 W, so the PC can run in sealed cabinets with only convective cooling. The integrated Intel GMA 500 graphics core drives a DVI-D connector for flat-panel monitors, allowing direct plant-floor visualization. Local signal groups attach through the E-Bus terminal spine, and up to 2 A of I/O supply current is routed through this backplane without external feeders.
Network communication is handled by two Intel 82574L controllers that provide independent MAC addresses for segmented traffic. Each controller connects to one of the two RJ45 ports and automatically negotiates a link speed of 10/100/1000 Mbit/s for standard Ethernet or real-time protocols such as EtherCAT over UDP. Application code executes under TwinCAT 3 XAR, permitting IEC 61131-3 PLC tasks, NC motion blocks, and OPC UA publishing on the same operating instance. System electronics accept a stabilized 24 V DC input, and brownout monitoring can trigger a clean shutdown sequence to preserve log files and retentive variables.
