The CX5020-0121 is an embedded PC module produced by Beckhoff for the CX Embedded PC Systems series. It is intended to act as a compact controller at the center of distributed I/O stations, HMI nodes, or small motion cells. By combining an industrial processor, local bus interfaces, and deterministic runtime software, the unit can replace traditional PLC hardware while retaining DIN-rail mounting and compatibility with 24-volt control cabinet power.
Computing tasks are handled by an Intel Atom Z530 processor that operates at 1.6 GHz, giving the TwinCAT 2 PLC Runtime enough capacity for user logic, communication stacks, and visualization. The system carries 512 MB RAM as its main memory, allowing real-time threads and the operating system to run together without swapping. Application code is stored on a solid-state 128 MB CompactFlash card, avoiding the mechanical wear associated with rotating drives. A regulated input of 24 V DC feeds the internal supply rails, and the electronics dissipate no more than 12.5 W under full load, which supports passive cooling. Two onboard Ethernet controllers provide redundant or segmented network paths for fieldbus gateways and configuration access, while the TwinCAT runtime provides deterministic data channels through the network interfaces.
The housing has an IP20 rating, so it is intended for installation in a closed electrical enclosure where a dielectric strength of 500 Veff isolates the logic from supply potentials. The unit includes four USB 2.0 sockets for keyboards, USB storage devices, and compatible low-speed peripherals. Its two RJ45 connectors transmit Ethernet data at 10/100/1000 Mbit/s to upstream network switches. A DVI-D output supports digital display panels up to HD resolution, and side terminals supply 2 A of I/O current to connected Beckhoff I/O slices. These components fit within a 100 × 106 × 92 mm aluminum chassis that conserves DIN-rail space in densely arranged control panels.
