The CX2040-0130 embedded PC is produced by Beckhoff within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. This fanless control unit combines an Intel Core i7 processor with modular I/O to act as the central PLC, motion, and HMI platform in industrial automation cells. Its compact housing allows installation directly on the DIN rail, bringing PC-based control and real-time fieldbus communication into the control cabinet without requiring a separate industrial computer.
It is driven by an Intel Core i7-2715QE quad-core processor operating at 2.1 GHz, and the four cores support deterministic multitasking for PLC logic, visualization, and data logging. A 4 GB DDR3-RAM module serves as main memory so large control programs and Windows services can run simultaneously without paging delays. Primary storage is provided by a 40 GB CFast card, giving vibration-resistant solid-state storage for the operating system and application data. Nonvolatile retention of process values is supported by a 128 kB NovRAM. The controller draws up to 32 W from its 24 V DC supply line, a level compatible with standard control power circuits. The preinstalled Windows Embedded Standard 7 P 64-bit image provides driver support and remote maintenance features.
Visual outputs are handled by an integrated GPU clocked at 650 MHz. It shares 128 MB of system memory, which is enough for typical HMI screens on compact displays. For networking, two Gigabit Ethernet ports presented on 2 × RJ45, 10/100/1000 Mbit/s connectors permit separate machine and plant-wide networks, while storage devices or license dongles can be connected through 4 × USB 2.0 sockets. The electronics withstand a dielectric strength of 500 V between supply and housing. Mechanical integration is simplified by the 144 × 99 × 91 mm form factor and the 1230 g weight, which keeps cabinet loads low and allows horizontal or vertical mounting next to I/O terminals.
