The CX2040-0120 is an embedded PC manufactured by Beckhoff within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. It serves as the central logic and visualization node in industrial automation cells, coupling field I/O, motion control axes, and supervisory networks inside a single DIN-rail package. Its compact format suits control cabinets where one controller must manage machine logic, operator interface tasks, and plant communication at the same time. Windows Embedded Standard 7 P (64-bit) is preinstalled to host soft-PLC or SCADA runtimes, and this unit ships without TwinCAT.
An Intel Core i7-2715QE processor running at 2.1 GHz provides the execution engine. Its 4 cores allow separate PLC, HMI, and communication tasks to run in parallel without excessive switching overhead. The board carries 4 GB DDR3-RAM for real-time variables and user programs, while 128 MB Shared Memory supports frame buffers for the integrated graphics interface used by local display connections. The system draws a maximum of 32 W, which keeps electrical demand low on compact 24 V control supplies. Two gigabit RJ45 LAN ports support EtherCAT or standard TCP/IP traffic for machine-level and supervisory network links.
The controller accepts a 24 V DC supply and withstands transients up to 500 V dielectric strength, which helps protect internal logic from field spikes. Program code and log files reside on a minimum 40 GB CFast card, and 128 kB of NovRAM secures retentive data during power loss so critical values are not lost during brief outages. A sealed, fanless housing sized at 144 × 99 × 91 mm occupies little panel space and meets the IP20 protection class for installation in closed cabinets. The front panel includes 4 x USB 2.0 ports, each rated at 500 mA for service tools or wireless adapters, and the dual RJ45 connectors sit beside them for orderly cable routing.
