The CX1800-0101 is an optional software image for the Beckhoff CX Embedded PC Systems series. It equips a CX controller with a preconfigured Windows-based runtime so the device can manage local I/O, communicate with higher-level networks, and host thin-client panels in distributed automation. By installing this package, a CX unit becomes a compact HMI and gateway able to present web-served diagnostics, accept touch input, and execute control logic alongside visualization tasks in industrial plants.
The operating system loaded in this image is Windows CE.NET, a real-time 32-bit kernel suited for deterministic PLC programs. Once deployed, the image leaves around 100 MB of RAM free for user applications, ensuring adequate buffer space for recipes and trend data. Native USB support lets the controller accept barcode readers or flash drives without extra drivers, while ASP support means the controller can render server-side web pages for maintenance portals. The included .NET Compact Framework shortens application development because C# code written for desktop systems can be scaled to the embedded target. An integrated RDP client allows the unit to act as a thin terminal, displaying sessions from a supervisory PC without local installation of the control software.
To boot this image, the base hardware must be a CX1001-xxxx model with at least 128 MB of onboard Flash; this guarantees room for the operating system, log files, and future updates. Secure fieldbus diagnostics over HTTPS are supported through SSL support. Additional functions such as HID, S-keys, DCOM, JavaScript, SOAP, and touch handling can be activated through corresponding libraries so the embedded PC can exchange encrypted data with MES servers, read capacitive panels, and expose device objects to COM-aware clients without recompiling the runtime.
