The CX1500-M520 expansion module is an I/O and communication add-on manufactured by Beckhoff for the CX Embedded PC Systems series. It is designed to attach directly to a CX controller and extend its fieldbus capabilities so that the controller can coordinate distributed drives, sensors, and actuators on an industrial line. By adding this module, the PC-based control platform can integrate with a DeviceNet segment without an external gateway, which helps keep cabinet layouts compact.

At the protocol level, the unit operates in the bus role of Master, allowing the CX controller to issue cyclic and acyclic commands on a DeviceNet segment to as many as 63 slaves while monitoring diagnostic flags in real time. Communication data are exchanged through on-board DPRAM; this dual-port architecture reduces CPU latency because the controller core and the fieldbus ASIC can access the same memory window at the same time. For this module, the DPRAM starts at the base address D8000 and occupies 0x2000 bytes, giving the control application a fixed offset for process images. This mapping simplifies driver configuration and reduces the need for dynamic buffer management in the application code.

The DPRAM ends at address D9FFF, so all process data remain within a contiguous 8 kB block that can be mirrored directly into the task memory of the real-time operating system. The module housing measures 38 mm in width, 91 mm in depth, and 100 mm in height, which lets it fit within the standard CX system carrier width without blocking adjacent expansion slices. This compact footprint supports dense stacking of communication interfaces on DIN rail assemblies while preserving clearance for airflow and wiring. Multiple fieldbus options can be added to a single controller enclosure without increasing panel depth.
