The CX1500-B520 expansion module is produced by Beckhoff and belongs to the CX Embedded PC Systems series. It attaches to a CX controller to provide a dedicated DeviceNet connection, allowing the PC-based control platform to communicate with distributed drives, sensors, and I/O over this fieldbus. By plugging the card into the PC/104 system bus, the unit converts host CPU data into cyclic DeviceNet messages used in industrial automation cells.

The board communicates through 1 DeviceNet channel, so only one field segment is addressed. Internally, a dual-port RAM buffer of 2 kbyte is assigned to the host processor, and this memory decouples real-time data exchange between the ISA plug-and-play CPU interface and the host backplane. Channel addressing is handled by TwinCAT 2 drivers, which recognize the module automatically. A payload of 255 input bytes and 255 output bytes is transferred per scan, giving adequate space for larger node assemblies. Node management supports up to 63 attached slaves, which is the normal limit for a DeviceNet segment. During operation, the electronics dissipate a maximum of 1.8 W, reducing cabinet thermal load.

Mechanical integration follows the CX system form factor. The card stands 100 mm high, extends 91 mm deep, and occupies only 38 mm of front width, so it can sit beside other layers without blocking airflow. An IP20 housing guards the circuitry against incidental contact and is suitable for installation inside enclosed control panels. Because the bus signaling passes through the standard stack, no external backplane is needed, and the open-style 5-pin connector keeps field wiring accessible from the cabinet front. The modest depth helps keep wiring bend radii short, and the low heat output supports dense stacking of additional fieldbus or I/O extensions in the same enclosure.
