The CX1500-B310 communication module is produced by Beckhoff as a plug-in option within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. The hardware presents a PROFIBUS DP interface that allows a CX controller to join an existing fieldbus segment and exchange cyclic process data with a higher-level master. In an automation cell, the module provides the electrical and protocol conversion required so distributed I/O, drives, and sensors operating on PROFIBUS can be supervised directly from the central embedded PC. This arrangement lets the controller exchange field data without requiring a separate external gateway.
The selectable transmission rate ranges from 9.6 kbaud to 12 Mbaud, letting the application match network speed to cable length and device count. The bus is wired through a 9-pin D-sub connector; pin 3 carries the differential RxD/TxD-P signal, pin 8 carries RxD/TxD-N, and pin 5 is the reference GND. Power for active circuitry is supplied on pin 6 with +5 VDC, eliminating the need for an external source. The station always operates in the Slave role, returning its data only when requested by the PROFIBUS master. For compatibility with legacy ISA mappings, the internal Dual Port RAM can be positioned at D4000, D6000, D8000, DA000, or DC000 addresses, permitting flexible integration in the CX backplane.
The module’s aluminum housing measures 91 mm deep, 100 mm high, and 38 mm wide, dimensions that fit the standard CX stack without overhanging adjoining units. On the front panel, PROFIBUS conventions mark Line A with green insulation and Line B with red, enabling quick visual verification of correct polarity during installation. These color codes accompany the pin-assignment markings, helping trace the RxD/TxD paths and ground return. Compact size combined with keyed connectors minimizes installation errors and allows the PC-based controller to be expanded without rewiring the complete segment.
