Beckhoff manufactures the CX1030-0000, an embedded PC positioned in the CX Embedded PC Systems series for DIN-rail control cabinets. The device replaces separate PLC and PC hardware by merging deterministic control, data handling, and supervisory tasks in one enclosure, letting machine builders standardize on a single platform. Because the controller is shipped without an operating system, the user can install Windows CE, Embedded XP, or another real-time environment that fits the application’s cycle time and security requirements.
An Intel Pentium M, 1.8 GHz processor supplies x86 performance for IEC 61131-3 logic and higher-level code. Working alongside it, 256 MB DDR-RAM buffers process images, trend records, and HMI graphics, while a 64 MB Compact Flash module stores the boot image. A front-accessible slot accepts additional Type I or II cards, simplifying storage expansion or recipe updates. Two RJ45 ports are bridged internally, so the unit acts as a compact switch for line-topology networks. Five diagnostic LEDs report power, dual-LAN traffic, TwinCAT status, and flash access at a glance. Local I/O and communication extensions engage over a 16-bit ISA bus (PC/104), and the platform dissipates only 11 W, which helps reduce cabinet cooling demand. DVI, USB, and a pre-installed TwinCAT runtime are omitted, so those functions are added only when required by the application.
The housing occupies a 99 mm depth, 112 mm height, and 96 mm width, letting the controller fit beside terminal strips without encroaching on wiring ducts. Its IP20 rating protects against finger contact and settled dust, so the device must be placed inside a closed electrical enclosure. With LAN jacks, the Compact Flash slot, and the PC/104 connector available on the front or side faces, cables can be routed forward while additional modules are still attached on the system bus without increasing panel depth.
