The CX1020-N041 serial communication module is manufactured by Beckhoff for use in the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Installed alongside a CX1020 CPU on the DIN rail, the unit adds differential serial links required in distributed industrial automation. By giving the embedded PC direct access to drives, sensors, and operator panels through standard wiring methods, the module removes the need for separate gateways and keeps the control architecture unified within the Beckhoff platform.
The integrated interface follows the RS422/RS485 standard, so it supports half-duplex or full-duplex multidrop wiring over shielded twisted pairs. Data transfer is possible at up to 115 kbaud, a rate suitable for most parameterization and diagnostic tasks on the plant floor. The module provides 2 ports, which are addressed in the operating system as COM3 (X410) and COM4 (X411). Each port terminates on a 2 × 9-pin D-Sub plug, allowing standard serial cables to be used without adapters. The housing occupies only 19 mm of cabinet width while standing 100 mm tall, so two additional serial channels can be added while using minimal panel space.
Power for the expansion card is supplied directly via the system bus, eliminating separate supply wiring and allowing the backplane fuse to protect the electronics. Despite the internal supply, thermal loading remains low, and the aluminum shell extends just 51 mm into the enclosure while dissipating heat through natural convection. The housing provides an IP20 protection rating and is intended for installation in clean electrical cabinets. Operation is permitted at up to 95% relative humidity without condensation, so the module tolerates periodic humidity changes when cabinet doors are opened in humid production areas. Its compact housing allows the module to fit beside the CPU and other CX components on the same DIN rail. The direct system-bus connection also carries power without requiring an additional external power cable or a separate cabinet connection.
