The CX1020-N000 is an embedded PC module produced by Beckhoff within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Intended as the central control node in modular PLC, motion, and HMI architectures, the unit combines an industrial CPU, onboard I/O, and fieldbus ports so that a compact DIN-rail assembly can execute IEC 61131-3 programs and manage decentralized drives, valves, and sensors on the plant floor. Its compact format also suits control cabinets where computing, I/O handling, and network communication need to be combined in a small space.
The computing core is an Intel Celeron M ULV running at 1 GHz, a speed suitable for deterministic soft-PLC tasks and local visualization. Thermal dissipation of the processor remains within 7 W, allowing fanless operation in cabinets with limited airflow. System responsiveness is supported by 256 MB DDR-RAM, which holds the real-time operating system, user code, and variable data, while a 64 MB Compact Flash card stores the boot image and persistent recipes. Two independent Ethernet controllers provide 2 × RJ45 sockets that support machine networks or links to higher-level MES servers. An integrated switch fabric forwards frames internally, so one port can daisy-chain field devices through the Integrated 3-Port Switch without an external hub.
The housing meets IP20, so it is suited for installation inside closed control enclosures. Compact mechanics of 96 × 112 × 99 mm minimize rail space and permit vertical stacking with Beckhoff I/O terminals over the 16-bit ISA-based PC104 system bus. Despite the integrated processor, switch, and flash slot, the unit weighs only 550 g, which helps keep panel loading low. Diagnostics LEDs for power, LAN activity, TwinCAT status, and flash access provide immediate status indication during operation. A single Type I/II Compact Flash expansion slot allows additional storage capacity, and the specified 11 W maximum power loss helps size cabinet supply and ventilation correctly.
