The CX1020-0020 is a DIN-rail-mount embedded PC produced by Beckhoff within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Intended for mid-range machine control, the unit hosts fieldbus masters, visualizations, and user software in one compact enclosure. It replaces separate PLCs and panel PCs by offering integrated computing power for deterministic sequence control, data handling, and HMI duties in automated cells. Its hardware platform and operating system are selected to execute real-time tasks while minimizing panel space.
At the core of the system is a Intel Celeron M ULV processor that operates at 1 GHz; this clock rate determines how quickly the CPU can execute control loops and Windows tasks. Two independent Ethernet channels, provided through 2 x RJ45 sockets, are interconnected by an Internal 3-Port Switch, so one port can serve an upstream network while the second feeds a local I/O segment. Heat is dissipated by passive convection, and the silicon is rated for a thermal design power of 7 W, yet the controller loses only 11 W to heat under maximum load, permitting fanless operation in sealed cabinets. All field and backplane communication moves across a 16-bit ISA (PC104) system bus, which keeps legacy Beckhoff I/O terminals compatible. External video or service connectors are not present because DVI and USB ports are omitted on this model, and no TwinCAT runtime is preinstalled.
Program and data retention use a Compact Flash card that fits the front-side expansion slot; the base configuration ships with 1 x Compact Flash Type I+II so the storage capacity can match the application. The controller runs Windows XP Embedded, a componentized operating system that boots from solid-state media and supports deterministic kernel extensions for automation. Despite its computing capability, the housing measures only 96 x 112 x 99 mm, conserving panel space and leaving room for adjacent I/O couplers. An ingress protection rating of IP20 indicates that the enclosure is touch-safe and intended for installation inside a protected electrical cabinet. The fanless design avoids maintenance associated with rotating parts.
