The CX1020-0013 is an embedded PC produced by Beckhoff within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Designed to act as a compact automation controller, it combines processor, memory, and field interfaces in one DIN-rail package so machinery can run PLC logic, motion control, and visualization directly at the machine level. By hosting TwinCAT tasking on board, the device eliminates external PCs and streamlines cabinet layouts in industrial plants that require deterministic execution of control code.
The computing core is an Intel Celeron M ULV, 1 GHz processor that supplies adequate headroom for PLC scan cycles and soft-motion interpolation. Application data and the Windows CE kernel reside on a 64 MB Compact Flash module, while dynamic variables are handled by 256 MB DDR-RAM; this split keeps solid-state storage for persistence and volatile RAM for speed. Two independent Ethernet controllers terminate on 2 x RJ45 sockets, enabling separated control and plant networks or simple daisy-chain topologies. Local I/O terminals attach through the 16-Bit ISA (PC104) system bus, which maintains compatibility with Beckhoff CX modules and synchronized data exchange with attached field devices.
Total thermal dissipation does not exceed 11 W, allowing passive cooling without fans. The housing is rated to IP20, so it must be mounted inside a protected enclosure. With overall dimensions of 96 x 112 x 99 mm, the controller conserves panel space and still provides an internal three-port Ethernet switch for local wiring reduction. The operating system is Windows CE, and an internal battery-backed clock maintains timestamps during power loss. A Type I/II CompactFlash expansion slot accommodates larger media, the DVI-USB option is not installed on this variant, and TwinCAT NC I Runtime is included for axis interpolation.
