Beckhoff manufactures the CX1010-0122. The CX1010-0122 integrated PC is powered by a CPU based on the Intel Pentium MMX architecture with a 500 MHz core clock. This clock speed directly impacts the device’s throughput and real-time response by defining the temporal resolution at which discrete tasks are executed. 500 million cycles per second allows for serialized task execution, which is critical in deterministic control situations. Although the Pentium MMX is an old microarchitecture by today’s standards, it strikes a good balance between computing and thermal dissipation, making it perfect for legacy systems or automation frameworks with low demands. The processor architecture, including micro-op scheduling and instruction set architecture, determines the range of compatible operating systems, programming languages and control algorithms as well as the maximum computing density that can be achieved.

Internally, the system design has two types of memory resources to maximize both permanent data retention and volatile computational storage. 256 MB of DDR SDRAM is used as the immediate access memory substrate for dynamic instruction and data modification during operating cycles. DDR RAM is a volatile medium that allows for fast read/write operations but is completely dependent on a constant power source, so it’s used for system state and time-critical applications. 128 MB of inbuilt flash memory provides a non-volatile storage for user apps, operating system kernels, core firmware and other data and is durable across power cycles. The design also has a Compact Flash card interface for expandable storage, so you can add non-volatile memory capacity in a modular way. This is useful for field updates, data logging, or gradual deployment of complex software packages.

The standard RJ45 Ethernet interface used for the embedded PC’s external connections can support network speeds of 10 Mbit/s or 100 Mbit/s, depending on the network configuration and cabling infrastructure. Ethernet is the foundation of distributed industrial control systems, where supervisory platforms, field devices and control nodes can exchange deterministic and non-deterministic data. The RJ45 interface has electrical and physical properties that provide signal integrity at industrial distances and in noisy conditions. Due to environmental stability, the CX1010-0122 is designed to operate continuously in a temperature range of 0°C to +50°C. This means it’s stable against ambient temperature variations that are common in industrial equipment enclosures. To ensure longevity, the unit must be installed in protected indoor environments with a controlled atmosphere. It has an IP20 protection rating, which means it’s resistant against solid objects larger than 12 mm in diameter but not against liquid ingress.
