Product Description:
The BX5200-0000 Bus Terminal Controller is produced by Beckhoff as part of the BX Bus Terminal Controllers series. Serving as a compact PLC and fieldbus gateway, the unit coordinates local terminal blocks while forwarding process data to a DeviceNet network used across machine cells. Within an automation line, it bridges discrete and analog signals from modular I/O terminals to higher-level controllers, enabling precise control at the remote station. Its embedded design combines a microcontroller, backplane power distribution, and a network interface in a 12 mm housing, so the unit requires little panel space while providing the functionality of a small PLC.
The controller can process up to 1,024 analog inputs and outputs and 2,040 digital inputs and outputs, enabling the use of large terminal strings without intermediate CPUs. These channels are time-sliced by a 16-bit microcontroller, which executes user code directly from 256 kB of onboard flash memory. To supply the terminal slice, the internal K-bus delivers 1,450 mA, allowing modules such as relays or strain-gauge converters to operate within the available rail capacity. On the fieldbus side, a DeviceNet stack supports 64 network nodes and connects through a five-pin open-style plug. This connection permits direct drop-line wiring alongside other instrumentation in the automation system.
Dielectric spacing withstands 500 V, isolating the terminal electronics from external surges. The power contacts are rated for 10 A at up to 24 VDC, providing dependable feed-through power to adjoining I/O terminals. For cyclic data exchange, the controller provides 2,048 input bytes and 2,048 output bytes to the PLC master. It also retains 2 kB of remanent flags to preserve machine status after a power loss. Up to eight SSB slaves can be attached for specialized sub-bus expansion. All circuitry is housed in an IP20 enclosure that is suitable for standard control cabinets and protects against accidental finger contact with internal components.
