Product Description:

The BX5200 is a compact controller from Beckhoff in the BX Bus Terminal Controllers series. It operates as a local PLC and fieldbus gateway, directing modular I/O terminals and forwarding process data to higher-level networks in industrial automation cells. By combining a bus coupler and processor in a DIN-rail package, the unit coordinates power distribution and signal exchange between decentralized sensors, actuators, and a DeviceNet master.

It handles 2040 inputs/outputs for discrete data and 1024 inputs/outputs for analog channels through the K-bus. For networked exchange, the controller assigns 255 bytes in / 255 bytes out for fieldbus process data and maps 2048 bytes in / 2048 bytes out to the internal PLC image table, allowing sizable variable areas without segmentation. Up to 64 DeviceNet nodes can be scanned, each coordinated by the onboard 16-bit microcontroller. Runtime code executes from 256 kbyte of program memory, while identical 256 kbyte areas are reserved for data and source-code retention. An additional 2 kbyte block stores remanent flags that survive power cycles.

System power enters through screw terminals rated for 24 VDC (-15%/+20%), and this supply is passed to the power contacts, which can switch up to 10 A to downstream terminals while maintaining galvanic isolation. The internal K-bus can source 1450 mA to field modules, and its insulation withstands 500 V between control and load circuits to resist surge events. Up to 24 VDC may be passed along each power contact, ensuring uniform voltage across extended terminal strands. When a K-bus extension is fitted, the terminal bus expands from 64 to 255 slots without altering scan timing, allowing a single controller to accommodate dense mixed-signal stations.
