The BX3100 is a Bus Terminal Controller produced by Beckhoff as part of the BX Bus Terminal Controllers series. The unit integrates an embedded PLC with a PROFIBUS DP slave interface so it can process local signals and forward aggregated data to a main control level. It attaches directly to DIN-rail-mounted K-bus terminals and is used to coordinate modular analog and digital I/O in packaging lines, conveyors, and building services. Its purpose in industrial automation is to execute application code close to the process and minimize reaction time in distributed installations.
The controller maps up to 64 K-bus terminals and can draw a maximum of 1450 mA from the internal backplane, allowing dense signal clusters without an external power booster. It supports up to 1024 inputs/outputs on analog channels and 2040 inputs/outputs on digital signals, so a single device can handle large mixed-signal stations. Application variables are retained in 256 kbyte of data memory, while a separate 256 kbyte program memory holds the PLC code. A 16-bit microcontroller executes the tasks, the 24 VDC supply voltage feeds the logic, and a dielectric strength of 500 V helps shield the circuitry from field surges. The IP20 housing is intended for enclosed control cabinets.
Communication to the higher-level bus is handled through PROFIBUS DP. The BX3100 accepts cyclic frames of up to 244 bytes in and 244 bytes out and maintains deterministic updates at line speeds up to 12 MBaud. Internally, the PLC image table exposes 2048 input bytes and 2048 output bytes so large process maps can be transferred without segmentation. Separate 24 VDC power contacts feed the field circuits and can carry up to 10 A, simplifying distribution to sensors and actuators. Eight SS/BS slave devices can also be polled on the serial sub-bus, and the common 24 VDC contact voltage keeps the entire terminal row in the same low-voltage class.
