The BK9103-1006 is a bus coupler produced by Beckhoff within the BK EtherCAT Bus Couplers series. Acting as the interface between modular I/O terminals and higher-level Ethernet controllers, it converts local K-bus signals into data that can be transported across industrial networks and therefore plays a central role in distributed automation topologies. The unit is intended for panel installation and supports distributed automation layouts where PROFINET real-time communication is required.

The coupler draws its logic power from a 24 V DC field supply and limits upstream load to 500 mA, so the control cabinet fuse can be sized appropriately. Two shielded Ethernet ports in a 2 x RJ45 arrangement form an internal switch, allowing line topology without external hardware. Each port supports auto-negotiation at 10/100 Mbit/s, which matches the bandwidth needed to carry the PROFINET RT (Class B) frame area of 512 bytes in and 512 bytes out. Internally, the device manages up to 512 I/O digital channels, while the K-bus feed of 1750 mA provides enough backplane current for sensors, LEDs, and interface electronics across the attached terminals. A 64-terminal limit helps maintain signal integrity along the bus.

On the same backbone, the coupler can also forward up to 256 I/O analog points, giving the controller access to temperature, pressure, or position data without adding a secondary gateway. The compact housing measures 51 x 100 x 69 mm, so it occupies just three terminal widths on a 35 mm DIN rail and maintains clearances for the recommended 10 A cabinet fuse. An IP20 rating confines its use to closed enclosures, and station spacing of 100 m between Ethernet nodes allows distributed panels along a conveyor or machine line without requiring fiber links. Protocol timing remains consistent across that segment, which supports reliable exchange of process data between connected nodes.
