Product Description:
The BK9103-1005 is an EtherCAT bus coupler from Beckhoff, positioned within the BK EtherCAT Bus Couplers series. Acting as the interface between an EtherCAT network and a block of Beckhoff Bus Terminals, it distributes fieldbus data and local power so that I/O points can be integrated into programmable controllers. In factory automation lines, the unit allows decentralized digital and analog signals to be merged onto a single high-speed Ethernet segment, minimizing cabinet space and wiring effort while maintaining deterministic timing.
The coupler links to the fieldbus through 2 × RJ45 sockets that forward frames at 10/100 Mbaud. Up to 64 Bus Terminals can be attached, yielding a maximum of 512 inputs/outputs for digital channels and 128 inputs/outputs for analog channels; combined, the process image may reach 512 bytes in each direction. Internally, the K-bus can deliver 1.75 A to power terminal electronics, and each terminal group may be separated by 100 m of twisted-pair cable when repeaters are used. The main supply for the electronics must be 24 VDC. Separate power contacts transfer sensor and actuator power at currents up to 10 A max., and a matching 10 A fuse is recommended for protection. Communication options include UDP-ADS, TCP-ADS, real-time Ethernet, and ModbusTCP, so the module can coexist with multiple control architectures on the same network.
With a dielectric strength of 500 V between field and logic potentials, the device isolates noisy loads from control electronics. Networks can be extended by cascading up to 20 couplers, and fiber or copper media converters allow an overall segment length of 2 km before a controller is required. The unit supports heavily populated terminal stacks while maintaining stable communication and power distribution across the connected I/O assembly.
