The Beckhoff BK9050 is a bus coupler in the BK EtherCAT Bus Couplers series, supporting 64 bus terminals and up to 255 with K-bus extension. Product Description:
The BK9050 is a compact bus coupler produced by Beckhoff and is part of the BK EtherCAT Bus Couplers series. It anchors a stack of modular I/O terminals to an EtherCAT network, converting electrical signals from attached field devices into deterministic Ethernet telegrams that can be processed by a central controller. Within automated machinery, it serves as the network edge, allowing decentralized sensors and actuators to communicate through a single Ethernet line.
Both the control electronics and the power contacts are fed with 24 VDC, keeping internal logic and attached terminals within the same low-voltage domain. A single RJ45 port provides the bus connection and supports a data exchange speed of 10/100 Mbaud. Up to 64 Bus Terminals, or 255 when a K-Bus extension is added, can be mounted after the coupler, and their process data is mapped as a 512 B In + 512 B Out image to the controller. This image can carry as many as 1020 Inputs/Outputs, letting large signal sets move through one node. Dielectric separation rated at 500 V isolates the field level from the host network. For cyclic control data, the device assigns 1,900 bytes of ADS user space to each communication cycle.
Additional Ethernet services are handled in parallel. ADS commands pass through port 48898, while Modbus-TCP traffic uses port 502 and can sustain up to 3 simultaneous connections. The coupler sources 1750 mA on the K-Bus, so power-hungry terminal electronics remain supplied without external wiring. Downstream loads draw through the power contacts that carry 10 A at the same 24 V rail. Reliable communication is maintained over Category-5 cabling for distances of up to 100 m to remote switches or controllers. The housing fulfills IP20 protection requirements, making the unit suitable for installation inside control cabinets free from condensation or conductive dust.
