The BK9000 is a bus coupler manufactured by Beckhoff for the BK Ethernet TCP/IP Bus Couplers series. It serves as the interface between decentralized Beckhoff I/O terminals and an Ethernet-based control network, translating local K-bus data for transmission through standard Ethernet protocols. By accepting up to 64 modular terminals, the unit allows a PLC or industrial PC to collect sensor states and send actuator commands over twisted-pair cabling. This arrangement simplifies wiring in machines that require distributed I/O stations and permits the terminal selection to match the connected field devices.
The coupler handles up to 512 digital inputs and outputs and offers 128 analog inputs and outputs, so a single node can support control systems that use both discrete and continuous signals. Its Ethernet port operates at 10/100 Mbaud through an RJ45 connector, allowing connection to compatible industrial network equipment. The coupler exchanges a 512-byte input image and a 512-byte output image, providing equal process-data capacity in both directions and straightforward memory mapping within the controller. The electronics require a control supply of 24 VDC, while a separate pair of power contacts distributes field power to downstream terminals without an additional feed-in module. Standard 4×2 twisted-pair copper cabling supports a network segment of up to 100 m between Ethernet nodes. This range accommodates connections between control cabinets or distributed machine sections without requiring a local network repeater.
On the terminal side, the K-bus can deliver up to 1750 mA, supporting dense terminal configurations that include analog converters, encoder interfaces, and other electronic modules. The power contacts are rated for 10 A, allowing compatible field devices, including pneumatic valve manifolds, to receive power through the I/O terminal string. The housing provides IP20 protection, making the coupler suitable for installation inside closed control panels and protecting against accidental contact with hazardous internal parts. Dielectric strength between isolated sections is 500 V, which maintains electrical separation between the communication electronics and connected field circuits. The modular terminal arrangement also allows digital, analog, and specialized I/O functions to be installed together on the same K-bus station without separate couplers.
