The BK8100-1001 is a bus coupler produced by Beckhoff for the BK EtherCAT Bus Couplers series. It serves as the link between an EtherCAT master and the company’s modular I/O terminals, allowing mixed signal types to be collected and forwarded over a field network. In industrial automation, this component translates terminal data into the fieldbus format so that programmable controllers can monitor process variables and actuate devices without adding separate gateways.
This coupler accommodates an analog capacity of 256 Inputs/Outputs and a digital channel count of 512 Inputs/Outputs, which indicate how many process points can pass through a single node. That capacity lets one station handle a broad mix of sensing and switching tasks without separate interface hardware. All terminal data are packed into 512-byte input and output frames and presented through a bus interface that uses an RS232 D-sub connector. Up to 64 bus terminals can be attached, while the internal K-bus provides up to 1750 mA to power their electronics. Communication over the RS232 link is limited to a maximum throughput of 38.4 kbaud, and the cable between the coupler and external device may extend to 15 m. A supply of 24 V DC feeds the device electronics, and the housing dimensions of 69 mm deep and 100 mm tall allow installation in compact control cabinets.
The power contacts that run through the I/O stack can conduct up to 10 A, enabling direct distribution of actuator current without extra feed modules. An enclosure rating of IP20 restricts the unit to clean, dry enclosures and guides cabinet placement. A watchdog interval of 10 s supervises data exchange and forces the outputs to a predefined state if communication is lost. This helps protect connected devices when the control link is interrupted. With a width of 51 mm, the module leaves DIN-rail space for accompanying relays or power supplies and supports a compact control layout.
