The BK5151/PL3 is a compact bus coupler manufactured by Beckhoff and assigned to the BK EtherCAT Bus Couplers series. Installed on a 35 mm DIN rail, the unit converts EtherCAT protocol frames so that standard Beckhoff K-bus terminals appear as local process images to the controller. By bridging high-speed fieldbus traffic to mixed analog and digital channels, the coupler provides a modular point of entry for decentralized machine signals in industrial automation lines, combining communication management, power distribution, and basic diagnostics in one enclosure.
On the process side, the coupler supports up to 960 inputs/outputs for digital signaling, allowing large banks of on/off devices to share the same fieldbus address space. Separate conversion logic accommodates 60 inputs/outputs for analog values, enabling temperature, pressure, or position transducers to report at the same node. Hardware expansion is limited to 64 bus terminals before a power feeder is required, so configuration planning must account for loading and address allocation. EtherCAT telegrams transit the device at a maximum rate of 1 Mbaud, which keeps conversion latency low for time-critical tasks. While operating, the electronics draw up to 320 mA from the system supply to power internal logic and K-bus drivers.
Power is supplied through a 24 V DC supply rail, with separate power contacts rated to carry up to 10 A so that downstream terminals can energize actuators without additional wiring. A 9-pin D-sub connector provides the EtherCAT line connection, and the internal K-bus can be extended to 255 terminals when an external power module is introduced. The enclosure measures 44 × 100 × 68 mm, conserving cabinet space while still leaving room for status LEDs and labeling strips. Environmental protection corresponds to an IP20 rating, making the coupler suitable for mounting inside standard control panels where ingress protection is provided by the enclosure.
