Product Description:
The BK5151 is a CANopen bus coupler produced by Beckhoff within the BK CANopen Bus Couplers series. Acting as the interface between the fieldbus and a stack of Beckhoff Bus Terminals, the unit aggregates local signals and forwards them to the controller at predictable intervals. It translates process data from the terminals into CANopen messages for distributed automation systems in which sensors and actuators are mounted on separate DIN-rail segments. This arrangement allows a controller to exchange process data with multiple terminal types through a single fieldbus connection.
The coupler operates at a nominal system voltage of 24 VDC, and its internal electronics draw up to 320 mA. The control cabinet power supply must reserve sufficient current for the coupler and its connected equipment. Power for the downstream terminals is available through two large copper contacts that can conduct 10 A, allowing compatible loads to share the terminal power feed without separate wiring. A total of 64 Bus Terminals can be attached before an additional coupler is required. Their cyclic data can be organized into as many as 16 Rx / 16 Tx process data objects for each bus cycle. The IP20 housing is intended for installation inside an enclosed control cabinet, where it remains protected from direct exposure to dust and moisture.
The station can support as many as 960 digital channels and 60 analog input or output channels, providing capacity for signal-dense automation systems. The fieldbus interface operates at a maximum transfer rate of 1,000 kbaud, enabling rapid communication between the controller and the connected terminals. The trunk line connects through a 9-pin D-Sub plug, which provides the standard CANopen electrical interface. The housing measures 44 × 100 × 68 mm, giving the coupler a compact profile for densely arranged control panels. It snaps onto a 35 mm mounting rail that complies with EN 60715, so it can be installed alongside compatible Beckhoff terminals and other rail-mounted equipment. Protective supply fusing of up to 10 A can be installed on the upstream side to protect the terminal power circuit against excessive current.
