The BK3150-0018 is a bus coupler produced by Beckhoff for the BK PROFIBUS Bus Couplers series. It links a PROFIBUS network to the manufacturer’s modular I/O terminals so controllers can exchange process data with field devices through a single hardware node. Serving as the network gateway inside a control cabinet, the unit supplies system voltage to the attached terminals and maps their signals to the fieldbus protocol. This arrangement supports deterministic communication across distributed automation equipment while consolidating local input and output connections.
The fieldbus side connects through a 9-pin D-sub plug, and the coupler can scan up to 64 bus terminals in one local stack. Data moves across the serial interface at a maximum rate of 12 Mbaud, which helps maintain short cycle times when complex machines require frequent updates. The coupler draws up to 320 mA from the 24 V supply to operate its internal electronics. Power routed through the terminal contacts may reach 10 A, allowing sizable loads to receive power without separate distribution blocks. At startup, the input current briefly rises to 2.5 times the continuous current, so the upstream power supply must accommodate the inrush. The housing snaps onto a 35 mm DIN rail, making it suitable for standard control cabinet layouts.
The internal processor handles up to 128 bytes of cyclic process data, providing capacity for signals exchanged between the controller and connected terminals. Its molded enclosure has an IP20 protection rating for installation inside an enclosed panel. Communication uses an RS-485 differential interface, and the functional circuits provide 500 V of dielectric isolation to reduce fault propagation between connected sections. Operating power is supplied at 24 VDC, with the same voltage available on the power contacts for downstream loads. The enclosure measures 44 × 100 × 68 mm, allowing the coupler to occupy a narrow section of the mounting rail. Its polycarbonate and PA 6.6 materials provide electrical insulation while keeping the assembly lightweight.
