The BK3110 is an EtherCAT bus coupler manufactured by Beckhoff within the BK EtherCAT Bus Couplers series. It links an RS-485-based terminal stack to an EtherCAT fieldbus segment, translating local I/O data into the high-speed protocol used by the controller. By performing this gateway function, the device supplies communication timing and power to the attached terminals while maintaining a compact cabinet footprint. The coupler supports decentralized signal collection in machine tools, packaging lines, and building automation panels, where distributed inputs and outputs must communicate with a central controller.
The coupler accepts a supply of 24 VDC through its power contacts and can pass a maximum of 10 A to downstream terminals for sensor or actuator loads. Its serial interface operates at 12 Mbaud over the integrated physical layer, and process images as large as 32 bytes are transferred during each cycle. The housing measures 50 × 100 × 68 mm, allowing up to 64 Bus Terminals to be clipped to the right side without exceeding common DIN rail clearances. During startup, the input stage can draw 2.5 times the continuous current, so the infeed wiring should be sized accordingly. A 9-pin D-sub plug forms the EtherCAT inlet and provides a secure cable connection with effective strain relief. The compact housing also leaves room for adjacent control equipment while keeping the terminal stack accessible for wiring and inspection.
On the signal side, the K-bus supports up to 256 inputs and outputs, with 500 V of galvanic isolation between the field and logic potentials. The internal distribution rail supplies up to 500 mA to the terminal electronics, helping the attached modules maintain stable operation without separate logic supplies. The overall assembly meets the IP20 protection class and is intended for installation inside a control enclosure. Beckhoff recommends a 10 A fuse on the feeder to limit fault energy in the power contacts and connected terminal stack. The enclosure protects against contact with hazardous internal parts and solid objects larger than the applicable IP20 threshold, but it does not provide protection against water. Suitable spacing and enclosure ventilation should be maintained around the coupler so that wiring remains organized and operating heat can dissipate.
