The BK3100 PROFIBUS DP Bus Coupler is produced by Beckhoff for the BK Bus Couplers series. It links PROFIBUS fieldbus traffic to the manufacturer’s modular K-bus I/O terminals, allowing decentralized modules to be addressed through a single device address in an industrial control system. By translating process data between the PROFIBUS master and as many as 64 terminal positions, the unit provides a compact interface for distributed sensors, actuators, and analog channels in factory automation. The coupler mounts at the beginning of a terminal assembly and transfers incoming control data to the connected I/O modules. Return data from those terminals is then transmitted to the higher-level controller through the same fieldbus connection.
On the signal side, the coupler can handle up to 512 digital inputs and outputs and an additional 128 analog inputs and outputs, allowing large mixed configurations without a second head station. A shielded 9-pin D-sub connector forms the bus connection and supports a line speed of 12 Mbaud, matching the maximum data rate available for the supported PROFIBUS network. Internally, the K-bus delivers up to 1750 mA, providing logic power to the attached terminals. The electronics and downstream power contacts operate from a regulated 24 V DC source. When the device is used in DP-only mode, it can exchange 128 bytes of cyclic process data. Selecting combined DP/FMS communication reduces the available process image to 64 bytes.
The housing is intended for control-cabinet installation and measures 50 mm wide, 68 mm deep, and 100 mm high, allowing multiple couplers to fit on a standard DIN rail without obstructing adjacent equipment. Power contacts routed through the coupler can carry 10 A to the field terminals, while a dielectric strength of 500 V provides insulation between the supply and logic sections. Up to 64 bus terminals can be installed on the right side of the coupler, with each terminal connected through the integrated K-bus. The enclosure has an IP20 protection rating, making it suitable for installation inside an indoor industrial control cabinet. Its housing protects against contact with hazardous internal parts and the entry of solid objects larger than the applicable protection threshold.
