Product Description:
The BK3020 is a bus coupler manufactured by Beckhoff and assigned to the BK Bus Couplers series. Installed at the head of a terminal string, it links modular I/O to higher-level controllers and allows the terminals to appear on a PROFIBUS network without individual node wiring. Within an automation cell, the unit converts local K-bus signals into PROFIBUS telegrams so discrete or analog data from the attached terminals can be scanned in real time by a PLC. This arrangement lets the controller address the terminal island through one fieldbus node instead of through separately wired devices.
The communication interface is a 9-pin D-Sub connector that mates directly with standard PROFIBUS cabling. On the field side, the unit uses PROFIBUS DP and supports data rates up to 1.5 Mbaud, enabling cycle times suitable for motion, packaging, and process tasks. FMS messaging is not supported, which reduces overhead when only cyclic exchange is required. Up to 64 bus terminals may be attached, and in each cycle the device accepts 128 bytes of process image input while forwarding an equal amount of output to the terminal block. Cyclic transfer behavior keeps command and feedback data moving between the controller and terminal stack without separate interface modules. The internal circuitry withstands 500 V dielectric stress between field and logic domains, providing separation that helps protect sensitive controller electronics.
All logic electronics are powered by a 24 V DC supply that also feeds the terminal segment through an internal rail capable of delivering 1750 mA to K-bus electronics. Separate power contacts can carry up to 10 A for actuators, with conductor voltage limited to the same level so higher loads remain isolated from logic power. The housing is rated IP20, which indicates finger-safe access and requires installation inside a suitable enclosure when dust or moisture is present. The enclosure also helps shield live parts from accidental contact during cabinet installation.
