The BK3000 is a Beckhoff bus coupler from the BK PROFIBUS Bus Couplers series. It functions as the gateway between a PROFIBUS network and the modular K-bus I/O system, allowing attached terminal blocks to be addressed with deterministic cycle times. By translating network messages into local backplane data, the unit lets a PLC poll sensors, actuators, and mixed-signal modules without additional interface cards. This arrangement reduces cabinet space and wiring requirements in distributed control architectures.
On the network side, the coupler supports transfer rates up to 1.5 Mbaud, and communication is routed through a single 9-pin D-sub connector to simplify trunk wiring. The module can accommodate up to 128 analog inputs and outputs and as many as 512 digital inputs and outputs. These limits determine the permitted scale of a terminal stack before another node is required. The controller transfers 244 bytes per cycle across all mapped variables. Its internal electronics draw no more than 500 mA, while the integrated K-bus can supply 1,750 mA to downstream terminals. The coupler supports 64 K-bus slots, and an inrush limiter restricts starting current to 2.5 times the steady-state draw. Functional isolation between field power and logic provides a dielectric strength of 500 V.
The housing measures 50 × 100 × 68 mm, making the unit narrow enough for installation on a standard 35 mm rail. The internal fuse and power contacts are each rated for 10 A, allowing branch loads to be supplied through the coupler without additional distribution blocks. Field devices receive power at 24 VDC, which is also the voltage required by the coupler’s logic circuits. The enclosure has an IP20 protection rating, making it finger-safe while leaving it unprotected against water. It must therefore be installed inside a suitable cabinet that shields it from moisture and conductive dust.
