The BK2000 bus coupler is manufactured by Beckhoff and is part of the BK Lightbus Bus Couplers series. It links a Lightbus field segment to the K-bus I/O stack, allowing a controller to read and write process signals from DIN-rail terminals with minimal wiring. By converting serial fieldbus frames into the internal parallel K-bus format, the unit supports distributed control architectures in packaging, conveying, and assembly equipment.
The coupler is powered by a control supply of 24 VDC, which feeds both the communication electronics and the downstream terminals. On the field side, it communicates at a maximum rate of 2.5 Mbit/s, matching the timing requirements of the network. The asynchronous transfer eliminates the need for external repeaters on short machine segments. Support for the Lightbus protocol is integrated into the device, so no additional option cards are required. Up to 64 standard bus terminals can be attached directly to the coupler, accommodating a mixture of digital, analog, and specialized I/O functions. When greater channel density is required, K-bus extender modules increase the theoretical limit to 255 terminals while preserving the same node address on the field network.
A spring-clip foot allows the housing to snap onto a 35 mm mounting rail that complies with EN 60715. The variable installation position permits horizontal or vertical placement in crowded control cabinets. The plastic enclosure carries an IP20 protection rating, preventing access to hazardous internal parts with fingers and blocking solid objects larger than 12.5 mm. The enclosure provides no protection against liquids, so the coupler must be installed inside a suitable closed cabinet when exposure to moisture is possible. Internally routed ventilation paths permit air circulation through the housing. During storage, the unit can withstand ambient temperatures ranging from -25 °C to +85 °C. The enclosure does not use sealing gaskets, which is consistent with its intended use in dry indoor control environments.
