The BK1150 is a bus coupler produced by Beckhoff for the BK EtherCAT Bus Couplers series. It links a block of modular K-bus I/O terminals to an EtherCAT network so a controller can read field signals and operate actuators through the same device. By translating internal terminal data into cyclic process images, the unit supports deterministic communication among machine-level sensors, drives, and a supervisory PLC in industrial automation lines. This arrangement allows modular terminals to exchange process data through a shared industrial Ethernet connection.
The coupler operates from a control supply of 24 VDC (-15%/+20%) and exchanges frames on the EtherCAT segment at 100 Mbaud. Each bus cycle can transfer up to 1024 bytes in and 1024 bytes out, providing sufficient payload capacity for large groups of mixed signals. Physical network access is provided through two RJ45 sockets that support automatic baud-rate and topology detection. The digital side of the device supports 8192 digital input and output points. Total current consumption consists of a 70 mA base draw plus one-quarter of the aggregate K-bus current, with an internal limit of 200 mA. The K-bus distributes 5 V logic power at 1750 mA, allowing downstream terminals to receive a stable supply independently of fluctuations in the field voltage.
The coupler supports up to 256 analog input and output points, and as many as 64 K-bus terminals can be connected to it. Separate 24 V power contacts provide a continuous load rating of 10 A for devices such as motor brakes and solenoids without routing that current through the logic rail. All components mount on a 35 mm rail that complies with EN 60715, simplifying installation within a control cabinet. The housing and terminal strips have an IP20 protection rating, so the assembly is intended for closed electrical enclosures where exposure to dust and dripping liquids is controlled. The modular terminal arrangement allows digital and analog channels to be combined according to the I/O requirements of the connected machine.
