The BK1120-0000 bus coupler is produced by Beckhoff within the BK EtherCAT Bus Couplers series. It converts EtherCAT telegrams into the internal K-bus format so that up to 64 Beckhoff I/O terminals can be addressed from a central controller. Used in industrial automation lines, the module collects field signals and forwards them over the real-time bus, reducing wiring and enabling fast cycle times. The device installs on a 35 mm DIN rail and shares logic and power with adjacent terminals through its integrated contacts. This layout lets the terminal stack function as a compact remote I/O station without requiring separate network electronics for each individual slice.
The coupler electronics are energized by 24 VDC, a level common to control cabinets, so no additional conversion is needed. Network traffic is handled at 100 Mbaud, matching standard EtherCAT line speed and allowing deterministic updates even when the terminal stack is fully populated. On the signal side, the device can manage up to 8192 inputs/outputs of discrete data, while analog processing tops out at 256 inputs/outputs. These limits establish how much process data can be mapped between the connected terminals and the PLC. During operation, the coupler itself draws no more than 500 mA from the logic supply, preserving power for adjacent devices. Physical connection to the field network is made through 2 x RJ45 sockets that support automatic link and node diagnostics.
For cyclic process images, the coupler exchanges 1024 bytes in / 1024 bytes out, a fixed frame that remains constant regardless of the installed terminal mix. Up to 1750 mA of K-bus current at 5 VDC powers the terminal electronics, and the power contacts can provide 10 A at a line voltage of 24 VDC to external loads. Dielectric strength of 500 V separates the field level from logic, while the housing carries an IP20 rating for installation inside a protective control enclosure. This separation helps protect low-voltage control circuits from the field side while keeping the assembly compact and easy to place in standard cabinet layouts.
